The UAW-Ford Continues the March of the Walk of Honor

DETROIT (May 17, 2014) – The UAW-Ford National Programs Center hosted the grand opening of its display that pays tribute to The Michigan WWII Legacy Memorial. The display showcases bricks purchased after March 2013 by supporters of The Michigan World War II Legacy Memorial until the bricks are placed in the memorial’s “Walk of Honor.” The display also features a limited edition, signed, one-third scale bronze replica of one of the statues that will eventually be installed at the memorial, a soldier reading a letter from home. When the bricks are moved to the memorial, this statue will remain on duty at the UAW-Ford National Programs Center as part of a permanent exhibit to carry on the mission of bringing attention to the memorial and the building’s history as the Veterans Memorial Building.

Speakers included State Representative Jim Townsend and Kevin Tolbert, UAW Administrative Assistant and Executive Director National Ford Department.

Detroit jazz legends Ursula Walker and the Buddy Budson Quintet performed musical selections including favorites from the 40s.

The UAW-Ford will be well represented at the memorial. A statue of Rosie the Riveter at the Ford Willow Run bomber plant will greet visitors as they enter the memorial. Pillars representing labor and industry will stand side by side in perpetuity at the memorial, symbolizing how the UAW and their industrial partners have always stood side by side in times of national crisis.
