Remember Pearl Harbor

“December 7th, 1941 — a date which will live in infamy — the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan … No matter how long it may take us to overcome this premeditated invasion, the American people in their righteous might will win through to absolute victory.”

With these words, Franklin Roosevelt marked the entry of the United States into the greatest conflict in history and with confidence, also foretold its successful conclusion.

The Michigan WWII Legacy Memorial invites the public to join in a candlelight ceremony recognizing the 75th anniversary of this event. The commemoration will occur in Royal Oak, Mich., on National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, Wednesday, December 7 at 6:30 PM, in Memorial Park, the future home of The Michigan WWII Legacy Memorial. Memorial Park is located on the northeast corner of Woodward Avenue and 13 Mile Road.

The formal program will start at 6:30 around Embracing Peace, Seward Johnson’s massive 25′ portrayal of the famous kiss in Times Square that symbolized the end of the war. The program will include photos of modern day Pearl Harbor, a screening of the 10-minute documentary ATTACK: BATTLEFIELD OAHU that visitors see before their boat ride to pay respects at the USS Arizona Memorial (weather permitting), a 21-gun salute, taps and the singing of the National Anthem by WWII veteran Harold Lanning. The public is encouraged to bring white candles.

When visiting Embracing Peace, please do NOT park in the fire station driveway in consideration of the fire fighters and the people of Royal Oak they serve. There is parking available north of the sculpture and immediately south of Village Automotive and on Coolidge Highway. Click here for a map.
